Early Success for Maximus.

Team EBS and Maximus today experienced a day of firsts. Not only was it the open-water debut for the 100ft Super Maxi, but the team also took line honours in the Ultimate Coastal Challenge between Auckland and Tauranga, making a near perfect start to their competitive sailing campaign.

The start of the race however was not so perfect when a general recall delayed the fleet of 50 until 10:19am. Maximus experienced light winds in the early stages of the race but carried good boat speed in the later stages of the event to pull away from all rivals and comfortably cross the finish at 19:56:44 completing the journey in 9 Hours 37 minutes 44 seconds falling just 2 minuets 43 seconds short of the race record set by Zana in 2004.

At this stage Maximus is the only boat to have completed the race and looks to have crossed the line over 2 hours in front of nearest rival Beecom. Maximus also gained further media exposure today with a feature on the Ultimate Coastal Challenge on TV3’s National News. The footage is available below for both dial-up and broadband users.
