Bitter Sweet Success For Maximus Crew

Maximus was due to arrive in Antigua on April 22nd leaving the crew enough time to prepare her for Sailing Week however a few days out from the event the onion ship carrying her from her last race in Tauranga, New Zealand lost power in the main engine leaving their ship stranded in the middle of the Pacific ending any chance that the team would make the start of the 38th Antigua Sailing Week.

Maximus finally arrived in Antigua Sunday in the early hours of Sunday morning where the rig was stepped and she was berthed in Falmouth Harbour by 9pm that night. Maximus and a delivery crew of 13 including the owners, Bill Buckley and Charles Brown and designer, Greg Elliott are hoping to depart Antigua late Wednesday May 4th or early Thursday May 5th bound for Newport, RI where they will complete preparations for the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge which starts May 21st.

The week wasn’t a total disaster however as the Maximus crew gained some further international sailing experience aboard the Next 57 Genesis in the Performance Cruiser class taking line honors ahead of Dasian in second. Swan 46 Milanto was third. It was a bitter sweet victory for the crew who were hoping to take overall line honours on their own New Zealand Built 100ft Supermaxi.

Maximus and crew are looking to sail around the island on Monday and are attempting to persuade Titan 12 the new record holder of almost exactly five hours to join them. Titan walked away convincingly in near perfect sailing conditions on April 29th to give Tom Hill and his US crew not only the race record but also the Yachting World Trophy in the process.
