Before The Gun ...

This year the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge will see the world's finest yachts race from New York to The Lizard in England. A course that holds the oldest race record in yachting history.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of "The Great Ocean Race" that saw Charlie Barr set the race record of 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. The record holding vessel of 1905 was vastly different to our very own Maximus with the 3 masted schooner featuring an overall length of 185ft (85ft more than Maximus) and weighed in at 206 tons.

With the obvious benefits of 100 years of technology in our favour Charles Brown and crew have their sights firmly set on the 100 year old race record.

Since the 1905 record was set a few boats have set west to east transatlantic passage records including what is sure to be Maximus's biggest rival Mari Cha Iv who hold the current passage record of 6 days and 17 hours but none of these records have been set under race conditions.

After completing the initial 2,925 nautical miles when crossing the finish line at The Lizard the fleet will continue on to the second of two finish lines located in the vicinity of the Needles Fairway buoy off the Isle of Wight. This adds approximately 142 nm to the distance to The Lizard so that the total race distance becomes 3,067 nm. Atlantic's race record for this course is 13 days, 10 hours and 15 minutes.

The first yacht to break Atlantic's existing elapsed time to the Needles will also become a new NYYC race-record holder.
