Maximus Takes The Lead	[ 27 / 05 / 2005 ]

Latest position reports show Maximus firmly in P1 45.1 miles ahead of Mari-Cha IV and 224 miles ahead of the race record pace set by Atlantic and Charlie Barr in 1905. The crew are obviously very happy to be in this position at this point in time. It has not been an easy ride for the crew however with the following report the latest from onboard ...

The last 24 hours have seen some pretty uncomfortable sailing. From 35 - 40 blast reaching 2 days ago, the wind soon came forward as was expected and we have over the last day had between 25 - 38 knots on the wind. The sea state has been slightly lumpy and when combined with all layers of clothing completely soaked through, makes for quite uncomfortable crew. The amount of spray coming across the deck has been amazing. The sail plan has ranged from 3 reefs and bareheaded to staysail and one reef.

Right now at the start of day five we are half way across the Newfoundland banks and it is getting very cold! The wind and sea state has moderated somewhat and the crew is utilising the dry state of the boat to dry out some gear, thermals, wet weather gear, socks s leeping bags etc.

We are currently in 20 knots of wind from 135 heading upwind at about 12 knots. It seems the reaching and running may have eluded us for at least another 24 hours unfortunately. Not too sure how we are going against Mari-Cha as the information seems to be conflicting however I am under the impression we are going quite well, but will just have to wait and see. It is a shame to hear Careera has withdrawn as it is now truly a two horse race.

Will revert in the next 24 with more updates. The freeze dried food i s outstanding! running a little low on muesli bars though!!
