Round The Island Preview

June 18th will see the start of the next event on EBS Yachting's international campaign, The JP Morgan Fleming Round The Island Race hosted by the Island Sailing Club.

Since the first race in 1931 which featured just 25 entries this annual event attracts literally thousands of sailors from Olympic Medallists to weekend sailors all handicapped which insures everyone has a fair race. This year will see an estimated 13,000 sailors aboard 1659 yachts taking the starters gun at various start times between 0650 and 0840 BST.

31 Yachts are classified in IRC Group 0 including our very own Maximus and will contest the Conrad Ritblat Trophy (for line honours) and the Gold Roman Bowl for the overall IRC class winner.

The course is round the Isle of Wight, crossing the famous Cowes RYS starting line to the westward, round the Needles lighthouse, pass St Catherine’s point, round Bembridge Ledge buoy, with all marks being left to PORT, and crossing the finishing line from east to west completing the 50.1nm course.

Many course records have been made over this races long history especially since the introduction of a multihull class in 1961 but it is of course today's modern speed machines that hold both the multi hull and monohull race records of 3h 10m 11sec and 4h 5m 40sec respectively. The current monohull record was set by Mike Slade aboard Skandia Life Leopard in 2001.
