Maxi Rolex Cup Preview

The 16th running of the Maxi Rolex Cup is about to get underway in what could easily be called one of the most ideal settings for a regatta Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

With both Maximus and Skandia making the trip to Italy following the Rolex Fastnet the battle of these two big boats from down under continues this time accompanied by 35 other Maxi's around the globe. Thirteen countries in all are represented including Argentina, Australia, British Virgin Islands, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain and United States.

The event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association (IMA), runs from September 4th to September 10th with racing Monday through Wednesday before the fleet take a break on Thursday for a lay-day before completing the events

preceding on the Friday.With three classes competing Maximus's main competition will no doubt once again come in the form of Skandia Wild Thing with 12 boats in all competing for line honours in the Racing Division.

The race week is made up of several inshore race courses off the coast of Northern Sardinia and around the Archipelago of La Maddalena with its narrow straits, rocky outcrops and shifting winds.

The courses are designed to make the best use of the daily weather conditions - winds in September can be anywhere between light thermally-induced sea breezes to the famous Mistral, which can blow from the northwest at up to 45 knots at times however racing is predicted to start in fine weather with 12-14 knots with a low pressure system moving in throughout the week that could see thunderstorms by mid week with the weather again taking a turn for the better as they more towards the fourth and final day on Friday.

With this event presenting EBS Yachting and Maximus a fresh challenge in a very different environment to what we have seen so far in the European Campaign there is sure to be plenty of action and close racing to report on.
