Onion Patch Series - Round The Island Race
[
11 / 06 / 2006 ]
EBS Yachting kicked off the 2006 race season this weekend with the New York Yacht Club run Onion Patch Series. The first event of the series was the Round the Island Race which saw the 80 strong fleet start the race in less than ideal conditions with light southerlies.
With conditions so light Maximus had her work cut out to keep pace with some of the lower rated IRC Class 1 boats however she was once again up to the task completing the 21.22nm course in an elapsed time of 3:16:30 just over 4 minuets ahead of nearest Class 1 rival Harrier. Not record setting conditions by anyone's standards.
The team will be hoping conditions improve as they set their sites on the race record of 53 hours 39 for the Newport - Bermuda race set by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket in 2002. If conditions are right the crew are confident that they can cross the St David’s Lighthouse finish line in time for a late lunch on Sunday. Regular race updates will be posted throughout the event.
