Maximus Breaks Round The Island Record
[
03 / 08 / 2006 ]
" With just three tacks and in just over three hours Maximus set new World Record "
Maximus slashed the WSSRC round the Island record today in true Maxi form, circumnavigating the Island in just three hours, 20 minutes and 9 seconds. Having beaten AMRO ONE across the line in yesterdays around the Island race, Charles St Clair Brown’s Maximus Crew of 25 were up for the challenge and set off in earnest at 11.17am to sail into the WSSRC record books.
Conditions looked good with winds gusting between 18-25kn from 350 (north) and tides favourable for the 98’ Supermaxi as they planed down to the Needles with boat speed hitting 31kn during a gust. A spinnaker hoist and average boat speed of 15.8kn saw Maximus eating away the 4hour 8 minutes record set by Leopard five years ago. Three tacks back in the Solent and they crossed the finish line at speed amongst horns, boats and crew cheers to place themselves on the record books for the first time.
“What a great place to set a record, hopefully the first of many, nice people, good crew and fantastic conditions. Thanks to the people of the Isle of Wight and the Royal Cowes Squadron for making it all possible. Lets hope this is sufficient incentive for lots more challenges to this great record. Go for it Moose!” commented an elated Charles.
