Light Winds Make Heavy Work For Maximus.

Report from Rolex Maxi Worlds Porto Cervo 2006.

With great anticipation and expectation the crew awoke on the first day of the Rolex Maxi Worlds Regatta at Porto Cervo to find disappointing light winds more suited to inshore light weights than mighty off shore power horses.

With top crew line up including Richard Bouzaod and Matt Humphries, they were ready to commence battle with the likes of Ben Ainsley at the helm of Alfa Romao and the rock star team aboard Wild Oats and Morning Glory.

A miss timed start put them considerably behind straight off the gun, forcing them to tack off in wrong direction to try and find clear our wind. With the course being a soldiers run of up and

downwind spinakering, it was not going to be Maximus’ day as they played the game of catch up across the four mile course. Having fought to forth place behind Wild Oats, Alfa Romao and Morning Glory, they were unable to really improve throughout race. The weather conditions of light 8 knots breeze meant they were caught between ranges for boat - not powered up enough most of time and struggling for height upwind, then struggling for right sail combinations down wind. The disappointed crew finished fourth across the line.

Light forecasts for tomorrow’s racing will make it heavy going again for Maximus, but both the boat and crew are still in peak condition eager to ensure line honours this week, so watch this space!
