Maxi Worlds, Minimum Wind

As another day dawned hot and still, the crews of the Rolex Maxi Cup yachts mingled on the dock as racing was postponed for nearly two hours due to lack of wind. As the starter gun echoed across the flat sea to commence day three’s racing the breeze was only just hitting 6 knots again and Sardinian Yacht Club plans of a long race day around the islands were curtailed, for a much shorter 35nm route.

Maximus got off to a good start with Matt Humphries at the helm, then a wind shift back saw everyone to port sailed around them, so everyone who went to the left paid off. Having tact over with the wind shift, the race was made. Once round top mark it was the similar soldiers’ course as the previous days with little passing options and Alfa Romeo taking pole position, closely followed by Wild Oats and the now familiar battle of Morning Glory verses Maximus for third and fourth positions. Morning Glory past on the second reach using a code zero and a 2nm windward beat.

Follow my leader ensued only broken by passing lanes at 15nm into the race with transition in two breezes returning to follow the leader rum line course to complete the third day’s racing. “Basically it was: Jibe, reach, jibe, reach, huge upwind beat all the way home with only top race speeds of 12-13knots.” commented Mitch Booth on the pontoons post race.

“We just have to hang in there, stay positive, hope for breeze & if not have to look back at the fact that this isn’t a harbour race boat, which they can’t extend into off shore conditions like the Rolex Middle Sea. The Rolex Maxi Cup has been predominately light air this week, whereas we’re looking at Sydney Hobart and recording breaking attempts where you need a different type of boat to the inshore designs and that’s what Maximus is.” said a reconciled joint owner Bill Buckley.
