Wild Oats makes Porridge of Penultimate Maxi Worlds day’s Racing

After a lay day on Thursday, Friday’s flags were fluttering in a bit more breeze and another date on the topaz blue Costa Smeralda water commenced, with two races scheduled for the penultimate day of the Rolex Maxi Cup.

Light breezes of 6-8 knots lifting to 10-12 knots gave more pressure for the boats as they started the 8.4nm first windward leeward course for the day. After a very good start coming out under Alfa Romeo making them tact off, commanding the leeward end of the line as this was predicted as the way for the breeze to build out to sea, but the right hand side paid, with the wind finally filling into 14-15 knots, with Alfa Romeo and Wild Oats going right for the first beat and coming out better off, thus ensuring Wild Oats won the race comfortably over the line.

“We chose the side of the course, had a good start but just happened to be the wrong side.” explained a resigned Richard Bouzaod.

The second windward leeward race of the day saw Maximus start across the line boat end and was jammed out by Alfa Romeo, who then went left and benefited from a big shift as they went right ahead of the mark. Although having taken the wrong side of the beat, Maximus were never far behind Morning Glory but not quite close enough to catch them. Wild Oats spread her lead, crossing the finish line first, with Alfa Romeo just three seconds behind her, the results for third and forth being predictably Morning Glory then Maximus. “…shame, as the last race had 12kn and much more competitive boat speed, against Morning Glory at least.” said Maximus Grinder Gavin McPherson, echoing the frustrated Maximus Crew thoughts as they crossed the line in forth again “Morning Glory were pretty close to Alfa Romeo today and doing very well”, he rounded off.

“Certainly it was a much closer race, not best of starts but pretty good race around the race track with Morning Glory” commented Brian Jones, Maximus Tactician, “The first beat saw Alfa Romeo & Wild Oats managing to extend a bit but not a long way ahead. It would have been nice for today to be a coastal race in that sort of breeze with some reaching and would have made it a more interesting, where Maximus might have been able to stamp her mark more in the Maxi Worlds.”
