Maximus got off to a great start across the line with the other 1788 boats for the 38th Barcolana regatta in Trieste, Italy. With the sun shining and wind gusting from 20-30 knots it was looking like Maximus’ day as the mass of white sails on the water made up for the lack of white clouds in the sky. But it wasn’t to be.

A last minute change to Maximus’ game plan made them sail to keep up on the same angle allowing their old rival to roll them after just 350 yards and watch in Italian arm waving frustration as Alfa Romao 2 continue to stretch their lead. Having hoisted the number three shoot, the breeze mischievously lighten and a decision not to peel cost them precious lengths on the first leg of the triangular course.

The second leg saw a reaching course and the Maximus crew managed to catch up before the boats were frustratingly becalmed as they drifted around the race marker by the land, watched by over 320,000 spectators. The fickle breeze however hit Alfa Romao 2 first and another local breeze took pity on local Italian MaxiJena to pip Maximus from second position and give the despondent Kiwi and Italian crew third place.

“After securing a beautiful start, we were not able to stop Alfa Roma 2 from slipping away. We hit the line together, but she was to windward” said Lorenzo Bodini, Skipper and Helmsman for the race. “We were all three very close to the mark near Miramare due to the dead calm and we choice to sail further out at sea where the gusts were stronger. Then we duelled with Maxi Jena until the end in a sort of match race. It’s a pity because if the wind had been steadier we would have done better.”

With crew now itching for a victory, they’ll raring to get away from racing around the cans and to show their dominance off shore at the Rolex Middle Sea Race – the last regatta in the northern hemisphere - before heading home and the challenge of the Rolex Sydney Hobart.
